LECTURES
Week 06: 24.09.2021
Visual Techniques: Chiaroscuro
Fig 1.1 Example of Chiaroscuro - Superman Comic
✧ Chiaroscuro refers to the use of light & dark to create the illusion of 3 d volume on a flat surface
✧ "Chiaro" = Bright; "Scuro" = Dark.
✧ It creates an increase of drama & tension, creates a sensational
effect, utilise positive & negative space
Visual Techniques: Composition (3)- Rhythm & Movement
Fig 1.2 Example of Movement
✧ The basic elements to create movement are shapes & lines

Task 02: Decisive Moment
Research on minimalistic movie posters:
The movie I've chosen for this project:
Fig 1.2 Chosen Movie, Cruella (2021)
Fig 1.3 Cruella movie clip from
Youtube
(25.09.2021)
I want to create the poster surrounding the "I am Cruella" moment
with the iconic red dress that has risen to fame as one of the
signature dresses of the film.
(Youtube, 0:39) The main idea for this poster is to incorporate the flames
around the red dress. It will be a challenging task, but it is a
task that I am looking forward to create (that is of course, if my
sketches are approved π
) Sketches: (25.09.2021)
Ideation (1) The Red Dress Moment
Cruella is a fashion-driven film, hence the reason why i sketch
it this way so that the red dress is the center point. Cruella's
pose is that of a confident woman (after the climax of the film
- can't state it out yet cuz spoiler -) I've added the
spot light shines in the background to further enhance the feel
of Cruella being on the runway. The London buildings silhouette
informs the audience the setting of the film, I've also
inserted the union jack into the red dress to further point it
out. (I'm still debating if the 3 dalmatians should be behind
Cruella, but for now, I will insert it in the
sketch.)
Ideation (2) Cruella & The Dalmatians
In this sketch, I've used the One Point Perspective rule as
all the vanishing points in this sketch lead to ONE. In this
sketch, the 3 dalmatians pose in front while Cruella is at
the back (or center) of the poster. Dalmatians are also an
important part of the film, so this was the reason why i
decided to put them in front. The background is a lighted
fashion runway with the union jack as the backdrop.
First Digitalisation: (25.09.2021)
After consulting with both lectures, I've decided to go with Ideation (1) and remove the dalmatians as it took away Cruella's glory~
Fig 1.6 & 1.7 Flat Colours + Gradients (25.09.2021)
Fig 1.8 Texture added into poster (03.10.2021)
Fig 1.9 Textures taken from Unsplash (03.10.2021)
My process started from inserting flat colours to adding gradients. It was fairly easy for me to determine the flat colours as my idea going into this task is to only use 3 colours. However, after adding gradients to the poster, I felt something is missing and it does not sit right with me. I headed over to Unsplash to search for textures to elevate my poster. In Fig 1.8, I've used the texture by Nathan Anderson to spice up the already dark background, adding a sense of mystery. Some might not think the desert texture might work for Cruella's dress, but I took the risk and inserted the texture in and I love it!
Fig 1.11 Iconics Buildings within the film (06.10.2021)
Fig 1.12 Final London Buildings (06.10.2021)
The London buildings I've chosen for this poster were landscapes that established the film Cruella. As shown in Fig 1.10, the Hell Hall is essentially Cruella's birthplace and also the mansion she's inherited, it's original name was not Hell Hall, but Hellman Hall, the surname of her biological father, the Baron. The fountain was also a significant setting, Cruella goes to mourn her "mother" after the Baroness killed her. I've combined the iconic landmarks to complete the London buildings silhouette.
Fig 1.13 Spotlight before and after amendments (06.10.2021)
Another element I've changed from the original plan was the spotlights in the background. I decided to make it into a sole spotlight that shines down on Cruella. It also helps to bring the focus of one's attention solely on Cruella.
Final Decisive Poster: (08.10.2021)
Fig 1.14 Final Cruella Figure (08.10.2021)
I've added the taglines from the film: "I was born brilliant, born bad & a little bit mad" , "Just call em Cruella De Vil" & "Ready for Revenge" to complete the dress.

Decisive Poster Animation:
Fig 2.1 Cruella on "Fire" Gif from the film
This on-fire moment is iconic and well-known hence the reason why I've decided to center my idea around the flames and I do think the animation will look sick. I have not attempted any animation prior to this, so it is indeed a challenge for me. (not me sweating :)
I went ahead and added flames to the poster in Adobe Illustrator to better picture how I will make the flames come to life.
Fig 2.2 Static idea for the flames animation on Cruella poster
Fig 2.3 Animation idea break down
Fig 2.4 Cruella's home she shared with her friends on fire
Ditching the white cloak dissipating into flames idea, I took another scene from the film - Fig 2.4. Implementing the buildings on fire element, I make it so that the London Buildings on the poster on fire and it slowly circles her dress. As the fire is an element that is not static, i will need to make it move so that is it believable.
I tried to use Ms Jennifer's method of animating, however it looked like (Fig 2.6), it was like the poster fortelling our next task's theme, which was horror.
Fig 2.6 Failed import of Poster from Ai into Phosothop
Fig 2.7 Frame by Frama animation in Ai (18.10.2021)
I decided to use Mr Vinod's method of animating frame by frame in Ai. I ended up with 24 frames. Animation step by step process: final decisive poster > flames slowly going up her dress > flames circling Cruella > full "ablaze" moment Fig 2.8 Cruella animation process in Photoshop

FEEDBACK
Week 06: Decisive Moment Sketch Review (01.10.2021)
Good ideations. The lecturers like Ideation (1) Fig 1.4 more, it
makes Cruella stand out more. VS in Ideation (2) the dalmatians stand
out more, hence takes away the center point on Cruella. For Ideation
(1), I was advised to go without the dogs, as it takes away the
spotlight on Cruella.
The concerns are the animation part as it will be challenging.
Suggestions to animate frame by frame & adding the white cloak
into the poster that slowly goes up in flames. Make it a looping
effect of the animation. The flames go up from the bottom to the
top.
Suggestions to take out the union jack in her dress. Maybe take out
the facial expression and replace it with the mask, will need to try
& experiment with it.
Week 07: Decisive Moment Design Review (08.10.2021)
There is ambition displayed on task. Concern about the animating part
as I am going to animate the flames. Originally Ms Anis suggested
sticking to original black, red & white colour scheme, but after
seeing my idea of making the fire burn in "london" up until it circles
her dress, the lecturers suggest it is best to keep to the newest
idea. But overall good work!
Week 08: Decisive Moment Animation Review (22.10.2021)
Received good comments from peers and Ms Anis. Ms Anis commented that if Ms Jen was in class, she will ask me to take up animation class XD.
REFLECTIONS
I knew animation is not as easy as it seemed, although I mentally prepared myself for the challenge it is still difficult for me. As a first-timer/newbie animating designs, I could not have picked the worst item to animate -- fire... Fire is an element that is very much alive, so it definitely is not static. I had my struggles in making the flames believable. I've pushed through and I'm glad I did not give up halfway and change directions.

I've learned that perseverance is vital in the design industry. Even when faced with daunting and tasks that might seem impossible, we must all center ourselves, remind ourselves of why we walk on this path and advance in the direction.
This Animation project was a fun and sort of an indomitable task but I've managed to finish it and I am very happy with the end results!
