REFLECTIONS

This module was very insightful, motivational and also challenging (in a good way). I like how we learnt the basics of typography in Semester 1 as I've come to realise that typography plays a huge role in the design industries, we see them on everything ranging from web design to traditional prints to motion graphics and many more. I've also learnt to pay extra attention to details, for example, the kerning between letters, overshoots that happen when dealing with characters that have rounded edges. This module is also jam-packed with in-depth knowledge about Typography, which helped me to navigate around tasks like Task 3(A) Type construction. I also like how we got to know a bit about typography's history, which showed how far type, as well as humans, have evolved.

If I were to pick my favourite task to work on, I will have to pick Task 3(A). We often take fonts we use daily for granted, although it was a challenging task, it made me appreciate type designers for their work on all the fonts we are using even more. It takes such a short time to type out a string of text, it really does need the practice and patience of a designer to enjoy the whole process. For me personally, the struggles (FontLab was really tricky to get a hold on for me) and obstacles (the 'y' & 'g' characters were the hardest for me to construct) along the way of constructing my own font and then seeing the end results were rewarding.

It was really like what Mr Vinod has said at the beginning of our lessons, "Once you learn Typography, you will start to see things (designs) around you differently." Sometimes I can even tell which font the brand was using and which other brands use that same font too. To conclude, I already have an interest in typography prior to this module, the tasks I learnt were just the tip of the iceberg of what typography can offer, I hope we get to explore more of typography in the coming semesters.
