INSTRUCTIONS
EXERCISE
FLIP Topic 01: Different types of infographic & online
tools (06.01.2022)
Fig 1.1 FLIP 01 Brief
GROUP TASK (06.01.2022)
✧ We were tasked to discuss and
research the different types of infographics. With the
research, we are required to compile them into a
presentation deck.
✧ I was in charge of researching Geographic Infographics.
Final Presentation (10.01.2022)
Fig 2.1 Final PDF Presentation deck
✧ This presentation was prerecorded by each of our groupmates and Yi Qing compiled all the clips by using Adobe Premiere Pro.

FLIP Topic 02: L.A.T.C.H (by group 7)
FLIP Topic 03: Miller's Law Chunking (by group 5)
GROUP TASK (27.01.2022)
✧ I shared the points: Form Follows Function with Zetie & Interactivity is Key with Yeanne Tung
✧ In the reading material my group had found, there is a part that described how a chair can be a metaphor for form follows function, hence I came up with a little interactive game to relate back to the topic.

INDIVIDUAL TASK (06.01.2022)
✧ We were instructed to choose one online infographic
tool/platform & re-design one poorly constructed infographic
poster with our own experimentation with the selected
tool/platform.
✧ Showcase before & after comparison of the
redesigned infographics as well as personal rating &
review on the online tool for (1.) difficulty (2.)
usefulness (3.) design templates & choices
✧ The online tool/platform I've chosen was:
CANVA/Venngage.
✧ After surfing online, I came across these 2
badly designed infographics that were from this blog
(source).
Fig 4.3 Badly Designed Infographic #1
✧ This infographic had so less breathing space that it looks super cluttered and does not seem to have a focus point.
✧ The colour choice for the title and label was also bad as it blends into the background, it is very hard to read.
✧ The choice of colour made the whole infographic messier. The colour choice for the brand "LG" pairing it against the grey background makes it hard for the audience to read.
✧ There are 3 categories: Revenue, Operation Profit & Operation Margin, in this infographic, there was no clear indication of what categories are in which circles.
✧ The companies under 68% were all squeezed as if the person doing this graph knows that they are running out of spaces.
Fig 4.4 Badly Designed Infographic #2
✧ In this infographic, the information were all condesend and messy. The visual sways the audience's attention & focus. (it also looks like a railway instruction map)
✧ The logos & texts are also too small to read.
✧ This graph also did not convey the message accurately. Questions that appeared to me when i came across this, "What were they trying to convey?" & "Who was the audience for?"
__
✧ After the analysis, I've decided to go with Fig
4.3.
First Attempts (07.01.2022)
Fig 5.1 Side by side redesigned Infographics #1 & #2
✧ I've put both infographics side by side to have a comparison. However, I was not satisfied with the end results as it looks like I am trying to promote cellphones. The #1 design was also quite messy in my opinion, I tried to showcase the phones the brands were selling but it ended up looking cluttered and unorganised. I've taken away the phone images in #2, it looked slightly better but I am still not convinced about the design.
✧ Since I was not satisfied with the 1st "bad infographics", I went and search for another infographic. In this infographic, I've found on the topic "Fast Fashion" from Infographic: the extent of overproduction in the fashion industry as shown in Fig 5.2. In the above, the usage of bloodred colour in my opinion was too striking. The idea to use a white tank top as the background to insert all the information was a good one, however, the tank top was slanted in a way that makes it harder to insert all the information in an organised matter. The irregular sizing of the numbers also makes it look messy and uninformed. The division of space was also not very well done as towards the end of the infographic we can see that they ran out of spacing and we can also see the top red part with more spacing.
Fig 5.3 Side by side redesigned Infographics #3
✧ I've redesigned it into a more uniform and organised matter where it's cleaner and more soothing to the eyes.

Fig 5.4 Comments from Ms Anis
✧ I've shown Ms Anis both the Cellphone redesigned & the Fast Fashion redesigned for any feedbacks. Ms Anis mentioned that both infographics should swap colour schemes. The colour scheme & the boxes used for Fast Fashion gives off more of a corporate feel which suits more to the Cellphone infographic.
Second Attempts (11.01.2022)
Fig 6.1 Side by side redesigned Infographics #1 & #2
✧ I've amended as per Ms Anis's suggestion & came up with 2 more designs that experiment with the background.
✧ Feedback from Ms Anis, looks much better compared to the 1st attempt. It also looks more on aligned with the Fast Fashion topic.
Personal Ratings for Online Tool: Canva
Fig 7.1 Canva.com 's page on Infographic Templates
Difficulty (1/5✰)
Fig 7.2 & 7.3 Red rectangle to highlight the setup of tools
✧ It was a fairly easy online platform to create designs. I enjoyed the interface and setup of tools as it is easily accessible and I really appreciate that they added the aligned tool under the name "position" as shown in Fig 7.3. Personally, I think in a design, the alignment of elements is the most important key to creating a nice and uniform visual. The red rectangle highlighted in Fig 7.2 shows the graphics bar, it was useful as we do not need to go search for external vectors online, everything we could have is within Canva itself.
Usefulness (4/5✰)
✧ Canva is an especially useful tool to individuals who wants to create designs that do not know how to use the Adobe Suite. It is a fairly easy tool where on the homepage, it has category buttons for the users to choose which kind of material they are designed for, see (Fig 7.2) for example of category buttons. Personally, I think most users will find Canva effective as it has got a library of templates for presentation slides. It also has the sharing function, which allows other teammates to collaborate on the same presentation. An interesting new find for me: I did not know that presentation decks done in Canva can be animated! It makes the presentation lot more interactive and interesting. Canva is also very helpful to students of all ages and is also a place where we can get inspired to adapt & create designs of our own.
Design templates & choices (3/5✰)
✧ Canva offers a variety of designs for users to choose from, if one decides to upgrade to Canva Premium they would unlock more designs options. They cater designs to a wide range of audiences, which helps to attract returning users to the website. It was also fairly easy for users to change the colours from the chosen template into a colour scheme that they like. However, I felt constricted while using Canva as I could not start on a clean sheet and plot down my ideas like how I would if I were using Ai. I struggled with finding the correct template that aligned with the chosen topic.
FEEDBACK
Week 02: FLIP 01 review 01 (11.01.2022)
Lecturer's Feedback:
✧ I've shown Ms Anis both the Cellphone redesigned & the Fast Fashion redesigned for any feedbacks. Ms Anis mentioned that both infographics should swap colour schemes. Week 02: FLIP 04 review (03.02.2022)
Lecturer's Feedback:
✧ Ms Anis really liked the chair metaphor in our FLIP 04 presentation, the presentation was welldone.
REFLECTIONS
This assignment gave me more insight of Canva as i rarely use this website and learnt that it is actually an okay website for designers if they are rushing for something and need something quick.
While research for the group FLIP topic presentation, I got to really understand how these FLIP topics can reflect and in return help us in our design journey.
