EXERCISE

Task 02, A: Key Artwork

✧ For this task, we are to design a Key Artwork using initial letters taken from our name or a brand that belongs to us. The final design will continue in Task 2(B). This task subsequently will lead to us creating collaterals for the brand.

✧ Things to create:Poster (A3 size) ✵ Animated Invite (800x800 / 1024x1024 px) ✵ Any 1 collateral relevant for your event/occupation

✧ We were asked the question of if we weren't a designer what would we be? At the top of my mind are three key words, magical, celestial & mythical. These words points to two jobs in particular that I am in fact interested in, Tarot Card reading and Magician. Hence for this project, I am creating a brand for the other me whom in the other universe is a Tarot Card Reader or a Magician.

First Digitalisation (10.05.2022)

✧ Because this is a key artwork logo that's going to be basing on my own initials, I'd like to add distinct items into my logo sketch. Fantasy is a genre that I love and adore, hence most of my work has a bit of the fantasy vibe to it. The sketches I've made are surrounding the theme of "sword", "butterfly", "ribbon", and not to forget my "signature" shine star.

✧ I wanted to play and see what I could come up with my Chinese surname, 陀. (as shown in Fig 1, 2nd & 4th row counting from the left) Atlas, I was stuck and I went back to exploring more based on my initials, RT.

✧ Further exploration was done through Ai, I tried 4 options and decided to refine more on design #1 , #2 & #3.

Refining Key Artwork (14.05.2022)
✧ Out of the 4 logo I've shown sir, the 1st logo on the left is the one that is more Me. I am glad that sir agrees on it and suggested me to move on with that design.

✧ I amended the form according to Sir's suggestion so that the lines are thicker and more visible.

Task 02, B: Various Collateral

01: Poster & Tarot Card (Collateral)

✧ The final occupation I've chosen is a Magician. I had an idea of implementing a tarot card into the poster as so to give it a more magician event kind of feel. I played around with the layout before importing the elements into Ps.

: // editing Rebecca here // : Whilist writing this blog, I realised if this task is to be a character, it would be this. I drew this art back in 2021 (further solidify the magical witchy mysterious vibes im alwys leaning towards...) If you look closely at the tarot card in this character's hand as well as the colour scheme is a bit similar to this task's !

✧ I was inspired by these movie titles to create a chorme like effect for my key artwork.

✧ I followed this YouTube tutorial on how to create a Chrome effect on Ps.

✧ After almost one hour of tweaking, I finally got to a point where I'm satisfied with it.

✧ I applied the same chrome like effect to the shine star to maintain a uniform look.

✧ I created a set of sticker designs based on the Netflix show (as well as the book series) - Shadow & Bones for my personal art shop & thought it would be fitting to insert the Warrior Queen character into one of the display cards as "Queen of Swords".

Poster Amendments

✧ After getting back sir's Feedback, I do also realised the position and layout of the poster is not that idea. I decided to change the layout direction. After a few layout changes, I settled on one that I like. This new layout shows the information clearly without really interfering with the key artwork. I've also added a smoke effect to enhance the magical feel of the intended event.

02: Animated Invite
✧ I've not dabbled much in creating animations. I am however up for the challenge for the sake of trying to bring the vision I have for this portion of the assignemnt to life. If you've been reviewing and reading my blogs, it is fairly obvious that I gravitate towards a lot of magical disney fantasy films. For this task, I am inspired by the animated typography in Maleficent's film teaser as shown in Fig 7.1 (kindly turn ur volume down to watch the inspo video). The texts emerging out of the smoke is one that i really like.

✧ I'd also like to experiment with a 3D spin motion for the Key Artwork logo (RT). I really like this artist's work. I do think I am not to his level, but I'd like to try it out. "Never try, Never know" is the motto for this phase of the task.

1st Attempt
✧ I started with the 3D effect motion of the KeyArtwork. I referenced the youtube video in Fig 8.1 to learn how to create the effect I want.

✧ I added the smoke and particles effect provided by Fig 8.5's youtube video. I also applied the Null layer to create a camera movement kinda transition.
Fig 8.6 3D Keyartwork motion + added background effects
✧ I do think it is too plain without a background music to accompany the animation. The song I've chosen was "Once Upon A Dream" (LINK here) to give it more of the ominous and mysterious feel.

FEEDBACK

Week 07: 13.05.2022

General Feedback:

✧   Vital: remember to create a balance form (negative & positive spacing needs to b taken in to consideration)

Lecturer's Feedback:

✧  the designs on the right is very complex, it is not suitable as it is a complicated form
✧ take note that the designs on the left, the thinner strokes might disappear when reduced to a smaller size ✧ the idea of composing the form is right (central element & stabilising element), however it needs more work. Think of the thick and thin of the form ✧ Think of the thick and thin of the form

Week 08: 20.05.2022
✧ Independent Week

Week 09: 27.05.2022

General Feedback:

✧   Vital: poster should be based on key artwork. It is also good to look and observe designer's work and analayse their way of designing and adapt and learn from their work.

Lecturer's Feedback:

✧ Suggestions on the poster: make the location & date the same width with the phrase :"a magic like none you've ever seen" .
✧ Sir mentioned there is a design style that irrespective of the point size and enlarge the content, just to accommodate the system ✧ the tarot card design part might be using too much space, can try exploring the space and incorporating the information into it

REFLECTIONS

Experience

Out of all the task for this module, I most look forward to creating and brainstorm for this task. Though there are struggles along the way, I managed to overcome all of them and achieve a design I am very happy with. The Key Artwork is vital as it is flows into the next task, which was to create various colletables and the animated invite. The Key Artwork represents my interest in the simplest way -> my love for strong, badass characters in the magical/fantasy world always have some sort of weapon (in this case, its the sword element infused into the T of my initial). I did however struggled  with the poster the most. At first i wanted to create a poster based on a tarot card (because even in a magic show, there would be tarot card acts). It did not work out (for the better cuz ive come to dislike the 1st few layouts). The one i really threw my enegry and time into was the animation. Im the kind of person where by if i have a vision, i must somehow bring it to live be it a toned down version.  I think I've archived it and am very proud of myself for pushing though (cuz gods know how much i dislike the huge amount of time spent on animation, but somehow put in the hours - if im not mistaken the animation took 3 and a half days :)

Observations

Whilist desgining a logo, it is also vital to consider if the lines are thick enough when zoomed out. And of course there is no forgetting this important element, which is consistency.

Findings

This task allows us to create a new identity for someone (the other us in the other universe, in my case its Rebecca, the magician). This also gives us a look into what we might do in the deign world, creating colletables for the brand. Though in my case, I've worked in the real life design world before so this is all familiar with me, using mockups and all that jazz. There was also a lot of time crashing where I had to pick one module over the other and hence at the beginning of this task, my works aren't to my satisfaction (eg: the posters).
