EXERCISE
Task 03
✧ This is a task whereby we could choose to create a typeface
for:
(a) Develop a font that is intended to be part of a solution in the area of
your interest.
(b) Explore the use of a typeface in your area of interest.
✧ The end result would be a typeface that intends to solve a problem or adds value to an existing use.
✧ For this task, we are to design/ come up with something that aligns to
our interest, personally my interests are: Character llustrations, Graphic
Design, Photography (just to name a few)

✧ Choosen idea: #3 : A New Typeface for an Interactive Game
✧ Problem faced: The existing font does not reflect back to what the game
is about.
: (using back Semester 1's font design)
making the typeface better as I was not satisfied with the previous
work

here)
✧ Goal: To create a font that has more of the game's feels and vibe to
it
First Digitalisation (10.05.2022)
✧ Reflecting on my previous work, I came to realise that some of the
letters do not actually fit the aesthetic and feel. Hence this time aroud
I will try to implement more consistency and tidy up the font.
✧ The first thing i noticed, was the difference in the bowl area, the
design on the right with more of a whips kinda feel suits more to the
genre as on the original poster, there is a magic whips that looks like
that deign.

Fig 2.2 Chosen Interactive Game & some elements that ties back to the
font I am going to create
✧ "When the Night Comes" is an interactive game that is heavier on the
character deisgn side, hence as shown on Fig 2.2, the typography element
is clearly lacking.
Fig 2.3 Changes made to letter "a"
Fig 2.4 Perfecting the letter "p"
Fig 2.4 Letter "x"
✧ I struggled a lot with the letter "x". I tried to tie all my
letters back with the existing "elements" I have created, hence
the leg design on the left.

First Draft Digitalisation (10.05.2022)
✧ I decided to do only Lowercase + numberings

Fig 3.3 Font lab kerning progression
✧ I ended up kerning each and every single letter together to make it look nicer.
Amendments Digitalisation (00.06.2022)
✧ After getting back feedbacks from Sir, I have decided to carry on with my font and create an uppercase to match with the lowercase as I came to realise I needed the capital for the actual application.

Fig 4.2 Font Lab Progression
✧ Just like the previous, I ended up kerning each and every single letter together to make it look nicer. (it was totally not funnn at all, also it was a pain to do all of them one by one...)
Final Typeface Design (25.06.2022)
✧ Instead of naming it like the orignal typeface, i renamed it to be "Auxr0ra". It is a combination of words from Auxiliary & Aurora borealis.
✧ In the fictional book world, I'd always read about this word, Auxiliary, and it always refers to a squad that protects/ fight against evil, which is why i think this is a fitting name for the squad in this interactive game. Aurora Borealis = is that nice looking sky thingy, which also looks like a magical thingy, hence the merge of both words.

First Draft Application (22.06.2022)
✧ I thought about the application for a long while, I jumped between making a poster and a video teaser, because of the time constraint, I went ahead and did a mock draft poster of the game in Photoshop.

Final Draft Application (28.06.2022)
✧ I really do think getting feedback are a good way of improving ourselves because now after stepping away from my work i've seen the flaw in it. And because of it, i went back to square one.
✧ A video teaser is the best possible way to introduce this interactive game to audiences that have not played or do not know what an interactive game is. Through this, I will showcase some of the characters and places in the game as well as using back some of their copywriting to promote the game. This is also a highly underrated game, which i think through this could help to promote to more people.

FEEDBACK
Week 10:
Lecturer's Feedback:
✧ for #2, one type of typeface for all dust jackets is not going to be apply, it does not give a fresh feel to the book.
✧ for #3, the typeface created will be specific for that game only
Week 11:
General Feedback:
✧ Consistency and variation is key to making a good typeface. Too much consistency makes it predictable.
Lecturer's Feedback:
✧ these letters need rework: 's', 't' (top too long), 'v' (tail to be consistent), 'x', 'j' (maybe end the tail earlier), 'z' (consistent with the tail direction). ✧adviced to look into more fancy typefaces to study and ref how the types are created Week 12:
//ABSENT with MC//
Week 13:
General Feedback:
✧ Typeface needs to be the key attention, and not the visuals, refer to samples given on Facebook page
Lecturer's Feedback:
✧ requires more work on the poster design as the title is not popping up as much, the characters might take away too much of the attention
Experience
I do think with this module, it adds more "meat'" into my on going design journey. Was it challenging? Yes. But was it effective in letting us learn more about typography? Yes. Task 3... by far the most challenging task, because the chosen genre was an interactive game. So there were limitations on what I could apply for the typeface I've created. Adding on that this is the final week, the time management was a bit off as there were other modules that at the time needed my immediate attention. Nevertheless, i tried my best with the task given and i am (now) satisfied with the end results! This is a typeface that I will use in the future. I've also gotten feedback from my artist friends that the typeface is quite unique.
Observations
This task was a bit of a hectic one. The progression recording process was a bit wack, but i did remember to snap a few screenshots of what i was currently working on. I do however found that numbers are the hardest to work on. I also went through a few rounds of refining my letters.
Findings
I learnt that every single letters NEEDS kerning, because the font is more towards the decorative side. It was really good that we have a reference set up by Mr Vinod to refere back on how to work on Font Lab.
