FEEDBACK

PROPOSAL 01

Week 02: 07.04.2022

✧ Ms Jinchi advised for my research topic, it is important to choose the genre of the magazine. She suggested to have 1 different genre to show the difference in visual elements are played out and how it will reflect it's brand identity. In this instance, we discussed that to go on with the research, I will based it around the Fashion Genre and it's difference in it's Target Audiences, GQ being a more male-targeted magazine & VOGUE being a more female-targeted magazine. In this context, the Role is more of what the magazine does, the impact is how it's consumers get the message.
Fig 1.1 Consultation with Ms Jinchi via Microsoft Teams

✧ Advice: in the future, for direct quotation, it is best to be short and no longer than what I've inserted.

✧ Ms Jinchi also remarked that it's important for me to decide what I am researching about, is it just the magazine covers or is it the overall of the magazine.

Week 03: 14.04.2022

✧ If it is a Malay or Indian author, remember to use their given name and not the surname when citing and referencing. Full Stop should be after the in-text citation.

✧ Suggestion for research topic, data collection & literature review: celebrity and brand endorsements in terms of visuals and imagery, be mindful to not make it the main topic as it may sway more towards marketing. It is fine to look up more regarding Pictures on front cover pages.

✧ The part where I mentioned about the body image on magane covers could be one of the impacts of visual elements, Ms jinchi suggested that i must show that it is not the only impact of visual elements that are being used for magazine covers. I needed to shorten what I've written on the impact of body image. The topic I've written about body image is an implication, a hidden message so to say. What I've written is an example of an impact.

✧ If I am using the word "visual elements" it is okay to repeat it as it shows consistency. Don't have to insert the said magazines that i am going to conduct the research on because i might change the magazines later on.

✧ When doing a literature review, it is better to be reviewing journal articles, unless it is a short chapter of the book it is okay to review. We are looking at how the researcher was conducting the literature review. When looking at books, it may not be a research book, but its an informative book.
✧ Feedback from Ms JInchi on Microsoft Chats.

CRITICAL REVIEW

Week 05: 28.04.2022

✧ Even though the topic of research article might be "print magazine covers as a packaging" it is still useable for the review as it talks about print magazine covers. It does not only have to be just searching for "magazine covers" Ms Jinchi suggested I could also look upp "publishing designs".
✧ For more than 6 author's citation, I need to research about the accurate method of citation. ✧ Be consistent on the type, It should be lowercase.
✧ Evaluation of the research needs to be stated under the Methodology section. When it was writen as such, the research must have done visual analysis, I need to compare it and see if the research is strong enough to come to a conclusion. Are the 4 mgazines well studied? Are the 4 magazines enough? Comment on the types of magazines. And how did the researcher group those magazines. Discuss more about the paper, critique more.
✧ For the final compiltion for submission, we only need to submit ONE writing. The headling will be Critical Review & start the body text. The individual stating of each review is not necessary. The way to ascertain which reviews we are refering to is to instead of writing "This research paper talks about" we should Cite the paper, for example "Rajesh, S. (2017) talks about". For the bibliography , insert them all under the Reference section.
✧ It is important to see if the research is relevant to chosen topic by looking the objective. Looking into the paper more in depth. Always question, what I think. For Example, "the researcher did not only onduct interviews, but she has also conductde her own research regaridng said topic." still needs more flesh out on what is to said about the methodology.

Week 07: 12.04.2022

✧ in the future can search for peripheral papers so long as there's similar keywords
✧ it is more of a literature review, and needs more critique it, for example, which part of the discussion has given the author the authority to state their points? (was it from the research they've conducted? was able to give this comment based on the research that she has done - it shows that it is not an assumption ) (though multiple sources reviewed by dobokovskia it was revealed that using balanced colour scheme is important, this shows that the author was well informed through her research)

✧ Feedback from Ms JInchi on Google Classroom.

PRIMARY DATA

Week 09: 26.05.2022

✧ It is good to remind the readers of research theme, topic, problem, objectives & question when starting with the assignment.

✧ It is suggested to not use “I” in research papers, use words like “The researcher” “it can be concluded that …”

✧ Ms Jinchi has mentioned that for my research method, the approach is mix method // method itself is quantitative (cuz of survey: google form) but with qualitative element

✧ Keep in mind to seek for citations and sources to back up the questions. Ms also mentioned it is best to read literature papers before coming up with the questions as this way we could get the evidence of why the questions are asked this way and why the elements mentioned.

✧Section A: Q3, suggestion to give 3 options for the responders to choose, from most, medium to least.

Week 10: 02.05.2022

✧ Ms Jinchi metioned good job, as I've put elements into boxes. It is a good way of organising my info, In my opnion, this is easier to see and is cleaner.

✧ Questionaire -> Section 1: Demographic : (Nationality) it is better to change it to a short answer as to not clash with the 1st question in Section 2: General Questions, where originally i’ve constructed the question as: “ How often do you read magazines in Malaysia? “ This serves as a hindrance to respondents that are not in Malaysia.

✧ Some questions can be framed so that the respondents can pick more than one answer

✧ Ms Jinchi assisted me in rephrasing some of my questions to make them clearer.

✧ Change item labeling to Capital letters, to match the answer section.

✧ It is advised to continue the numbering and not divide them according to their sections

✧ Because my RP is to investigate the diff of visual elements on both male & female magazines, it is suggested that i also include magazine covers of male models to balance out the answering field.

Week 12: 16.05.2022

✧ stating things like (4-is likely) & so forth helps to give a clearer indication of what I am referring to

✧ only use ( ) to make more clarity, there’s no need to use it for main sentences. ( ) is also for citations

✧ add all pictures used in the survey questionnaire in the data collection to give a more clearer reference when the lecturers/ whoever that reads the paper understands it

✧ For the open ended long answers, create a link to the original full data, share it to ms jinchi to have a reference

✧ might need to research more about the word “inclusivity” & “clusivity” to make sure I get to deliver the right message/meaning

PRIMARY DATA

Week 13: 23.06.2022

✧ Slides coverage was simple and clear to understand, the elements also relates back to the topic (magazine), however ms did noted that the “dam” letter cut out looks more like Seventeen & Teen Vogue, which I agree on as well. (But there’s not much elements I could find in canvas so I think this will do for now..)

✧ Table of contents, change objectives to Introduction to introduce the RP, RO & RQ

✧ Ms suggested to formulate the RQ & Roster tat so that it looks like question on the top & answer at the bottom

✧ Visual hierarchy was seen throughout the slide design through the colours

✧ The words written is not a lot as in the draft presentation I have presented to ms showed that I did not directly read from the slides so it is okay.

✧ For the survey questionnaire, ms suggested to discuss more about how the questions were designed

✧ Data analysis portion, when presenting about section 1 (the demographic of the respondents) it is best to summarise it. Adding a header to section 1 is better to indicate what I am presenting

✧ There is a leighwey for me to do 23 slides max (excluding the thank you slide)

✧ Data analysis, only feature key findings that creates and have an impact and connection to the RP

Week 14: 30.06.2022

✧ Change* the pointer on demographics to the correct thingy (mentioned here was the analysis of females readers read more magazines)

✧ *silly mistake change it* the numbering on magazine brands move it up so it does not block my face when presenting.

✧ Ms Jinchi suggested to take out the 2 yellow box that highlights the top 2 magazine brands as it disrupts the aesthetic

✧ Suggested to change the topic phrases to be shorter on the “TOP 5 & TOP 3 Keywords”

✧ Double check and make sure there is consistency with word used “keywords or responses

✧ Adds constraint into the conclusion slide

✧ References to be added only after Thank You, do not show these during the recorded presentation

REFLECTIONS

Experience

"Every starting point is difficult but without stepping a foot out the box we would not know if it's actually hard or was it all penned up anxiety." This sentence perfectly encapsulated this module.
Prior to taking this module, I've not had any experience in research, not to mention, I have zero knowledge on what is google scholar or what is a research journal or article.

Assignment 01:
The first task, proposal 01, is sort of the pointer that i will need to decide on as the field of study I'd want to focus on. I debated a lot on what topic is suitable as my topic ideas gravitated more towards the western audiences with ideas like doing research on Art Nouveau and Medival Art paintings. I've settled on a topic that Malaysians would still recognise and know - research on Print Magazines.

Assignment 02:
Once the topic was established, the real challenge appeared. There were very limited research articles on scholar portals with print magazine/ visual elements on magazines as a topic, which made it even harder for me to narrow down recent articles. There were also a lot of articles that seemed relevant but proved fruitless and not helpful to my topic.

Assignment 03:
This was the easiest portion of the whole module. Because the foundation was done (in Assignment 02), it was a smooth transition from there on to narrow down the scope & then crafting a series of questions for the public to answer. Pictures and visuals were the thing that aided me a lot in creating the questions as more respondents would be more open to answer questionaries with more vsiuals on them.

Observations

I've always been a person who reads during their free time, so diving into reading long research articles were not a problem for me. However, the part that I found most daunting was sifting out and leaving only the important points. Almost all the wordings sounded important and valid to the topic and something i could use, but also at the same time i kept in mind to cut down as much as possible and only use the vital pieces of information. During weekly consultations with Ms Jinchi also aided in me correcting some points in my document as Ms pointed out similar mistakes from other student's work that also applied to mine.

Findings

With my reading history, it also came with the intrest in writing. Back then, I could only do ficition writing or informal writing. Surprisingly, I developed a sense of "okayness" to writing formal style writings like this research paper. The writing style was just like what we were taught back in Primary School. To have a good essay, one would need the big idea (the topic-proposal), points (the vital information- critical review) and supporting facts (primary data). Overall, I am very satisfied with the work I have done for this module. (this might be my favorite module of the semester)
