Publishing Design Task 02

INSTRUCTIONS:

TASK 02: Content Generation

✧ We were tasked to generate 3k words for our book, either by writing it ourselves or sourcing from existing e-books.

✧ The content writing needs to include at least 3 chapters to segregate the overall content. Items that are key:
- 3 to 5 subtexts (sidebars)
- 1 pull quote per chapter

✧ I've decided to write my own content, based on snippet of notes i've written years ago.

✧ Summary:
TOO YOUNG TO B SAD is a collection of thoughts collected throughout the years that the author experienced. Relationships are a tricky thing, be it platonic or romantic.

The attached below was the draft script:

✧ The next step after this was to highlight the areas in the book, that in the end will be turned into illustrations to accompany the texts. The visual direction could be either photo collage, photography, illustrations or mixed media.

Mood board

Fig 2.1 Mood Board (10.09.2022)

✧ The book I've written talks deeply about one's emotions and how one feels on the topic of relationships. The colours I personally associate with emotions are purple, blue, turquoise, peach and yellow. As for the art style, I would like to experiment with a simpler form of illustration with a pencil or crayon brush effect on them. The illustrations I normally do are very detailed and hence toning down my style would be fit the texts perfectly as to convey the exact feelings.

Attempt 1
✧ Sir mentioned that this composition was too safe. Suggest to stray away from the Disney feel and come up with something more threatening and easier to illustrate.

FEEDBACK

Week 02

General Feedback:
Remember to include references of images/ websites/ reading references  that helped to inspire the story
After “ must insert a full stop
Starting titles are usually formatted as such that they are with capital letters, eg: “All The Things I Never Said”
Beware of the different types of copywriting information. There is a type call “(CC) Creative Content”, this is okay to share around so long as it is not commercial
Introduction needs to be longer than only one paragraph
There is no real need to include the word “Chapter 1”, it is okay to remove it

Specific Feedback:
Formatting is okay
Key in references from everything I referenced
Highlight 16 phrases to illustrate, create pull notes and subtexts

Week 03

General Feedback:
line length needs to be readable
3 columns is impossible for our book sizes, font size will b 8pt, it will b the smallest point size (in terms of body text), subtext can go down to 7pt
2 columns and 1 columns is way we all can stick with
draw guides outside of page so it will go over to two pages
Insert guides for when the text or image stops
Must select two spreads to insert the guides, layout > creates guides

Specific Feedback:

(Gird)

text has to run top to bottom when the grid was determined

subtext is too artistic, all subtext should remain the same sides

title needs to be bigger

first thing to check is line length

paragraph spacing is atrocious

text box needs to be in one box

line length should be the same for subtexts

pull quotes can be artistic

(Visual)

make visual more exciting, interesting composition, viewpoints is important

watch arcane understand composition and the different compositions

the one I drew is okay but composition is too safe, with the technical skills I have and take it to the level of arcane

try to dispense the Disney feel I have for my character and adapt something that is stronger and threatening do not be safe

Week 04

Specific Feedback:
(Visuals)

Execution & rendering is good, angles would need more work

Suggestion to show parts of the camera or multiple cameras but only one has colours to create interesting feel

placing the hourglass visual is too forward, needs to make it more mysterious and not put it too forward

Final Specific Feedback
✧ W10, T2: Rest is fine. Level: Developing-Mastering

REFLECTIONS

Experience

I have this folder of short poems and thoughts on my phone in which i used it as inspiration to turn it into a 3k words write up for this task. It was a risk as we were only given a short period of time to complete it, but i pushed through with it. Because it was a write up inspired by real life incidents, it was fairly easy for me to visualise what would go well with each phrases. I then went ahead in search of an easier arts tyle and a colour scheme that suits the theme.

Observations

Whenever a grid was determined, one must always let words flow from the top to the bottom of the grid. The form and movement exercise in task 01 helped me in creating a fun layout

Findings

Book publishing is an interesting yet challenging. As there are a lot of details that we need to pay closer attention to. It is also a way to express creative based on the lecturers learnt and how we can change from then on.

Publishing a Book: Five Important Design Tips

https://www.pixartprinting.co.uk/blog/publishing-book-design-tips/

According to the article, aesthetics, layout and legibility are key elements for producing and/ or publishing a well-made book.

Elements to keep in mind while creating a book:

             Finding a cover image

             Choosing a cover font

             Getting the layout right

            ✧ Publishing the book

Making a good impression when one individual sees the book's cover is vital as coherent images will make the book ore appealing.

The example given in the article was the book cover of 'Jurassic Park'

First, one would need to establish an idea, and then search for the image that suits or fits the idea concept

Font is equally as important as the book cover's image

According to the article, from a graphics point of view, one should design a book cover like a poster that is visible from afar and easily recognisable and memorable.

The example given in the article was the book cover of "Magia".

Inner layouts must be well laid out, which makes the book easier to read and browse through

Aspects of a layout that are vital:

Margins: should be the right size so the text boxes are proportionate
✧ Headers & page numbers: helps a reader to navigate the book, but also will need to be done in a way that they are being informed without being disturbed from reading
✧ Widows, Orphans & Justificatoin: good layout is a fundamental for pleasant reading, checking through the finished work is a good way of ensuring the three items are not neglected
