EXERCISE

Project 02: Innovative Packaging

✧ Project 02 is a collaboration project with the School of Biosciences's Food Science students & also with a real life client: Kawan Food Sdn. Bhd.

✧ We were told that this semester there are less food science students compared to us design school students, hence there will be some groups who are doing the same food item.

✧ End Goal: to produce packaging design for the selected food product from Food Science students.

✧ Sir allocated my group to create the design for the "Fresh Banana Blossom" group

Idea Discussion
✧ First, we faced the issue on a design stand point that the product name given was too long. It might serve as an obstacle to us when we implement the product name into the packaging design. It might also make the whole product name font size smaller, in order to accumulate the name.

✧ We've raised this potential obstacle to Mr Shamsul, Sir suggested all 3 groups could come up with their unique names.

The 5 of us discussed about potential names of what we name it. There were a few names that we've came up with but in the end we settled with "Sweetpoballs", which derived from the long name of "Sweet potato banana balls".

With the name of the product sorted out, we went on to think of a general art direction of the project.

We researched images that aligned with Kawan Food & also images that have a more modern twist to it.

Dividing the task
Earlier on this project, we made the decision to create one design each and narrow down the best designs through elimination process according to the feedbacks given.
Kawan Food Style: Ellyn & Shu Huan
Modern Style: Ivy, Yi Qing & Myself

Digital Sketch
I will be working on the modern style as mentioned above.

As almost all the Kawan Food packaging design includes a photograph of the product. The vision I had for the packaging was to have a more fluid-est look as oppose to the rigid potato balls in a bowl.

The colour combination were Yellow & Purple, Yellow for the potato balls & the Purple for the banana blossoms

Digitalisation Progression
I started by putting basic shapes into the artboard & also constructing the wrapped text.

1st attempt:
Attempt 2 was a more solid design as compared to attempt 1.

2nd attempt:
After receiving feedbacks form the food science students, I started to amend it accordingly.

The colour scheme for was amended, In the end I eyedropped the colour from the real banana blossom

Final attempt:
We consulted Mr Shamsul, sir suggested I reduce the size of the information in front. I have amended accordingly.

Our group received positive feedbacks from Kawan Food on all the 4 designs.

Final Packaging Design Choice:
✧ We needed to pick the final design, hence we asked Mr Shamsul for his opinion, as shown in Fig 10.1.

✧ Sir suggested we go with Yi Qing's design!

FEEDBACK

Week 10
Slides:
  Strategise presentation
  Include competitor packaging, analyse,

Packaging Design:
Kawan food logo might need changing, maybe insert it bigger
The title looks nice, the two lines around the title suits the title distortion. The included words of the Crispy sweet potato banana balls is a good move to indicate the product item.
Product is too bright, could try other ball pictures.
Product placement could use a mix of static and dynamic
Made with banana ingredients could be placed smaller on top of the packaging. Could switch the actual pictures of the banana ingredients to illustrations. (The ones I’ve done in the sketch)

Week 11
Packaging Design
Sir complimented that our group's designs look the best and realistic
  Ample research was done

Week 12
Food Science Student
It looks too compact, too much information in the front part. May I know why you use the purple colour? The font of the information can be slightly smaller. I think the 300 g net weight is not that important to be in a bigger size.

Kawan Food Feedback
They mentioned loved all 4 of our designs, out of all the groups who presented about the sweet banana potato balls.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
As a student, this is the first time we've gotten to have a school crossover project. It was intriguing to see what the other school: the food science students' products are. It was also filled with some sort of uncertainty as to how we shall go about with the project. Nevertheless, we pushed through the fog as one. I think in part of us being buried down with other modules, we started this project slightly later than expected. But we managed to produce good work! So that is what it all matters!

Observations
Like all things before going into TDS's modules, we take things we see daily for granted. Packaging and merchandising for example, is something we see almost everyday and at every where. It was interesting to learn bout the different display items and how we could implement them into our final project. It's all about the details, nutrition facts, the bar thingy for food ingredients, halal logo, brand logo, it all matters in a packaging.

Findings
A lot of things were needed to take into consideration. Like how big an item should be on the packaging? Or how we shall match with the brand's image or how we can differ from it and make it more modern. We also appreciate that we got insightful industry feedbacks from Kawan Food.
